In a decisive move to protect consumers and stabilize essential food supplies, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has initiated immediate measures following the imposition of restrictions on inter-provincial wheat movement by the Punjab government. The Chief Minister has directed the Provincial Food Department to commence the release of 136,000 metric tons of wheat from strategic reserves, aiming to shield the public from escalating price pressures in the open market.
Market Surge and Subsidized Response
After the Punjab government's restrictions were enforced, wheat prices in the provincial open market surged dramatically to Rs13,650 per 100 kilograms. To counter this inflationary pressure and ensure affordability for all citizens, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to supply wheat at a subsidized rate of Rs10,414 per 100 kilograms. This intervention means that a 20-kilogram bag of flour will now be available to the public at a subsidized price of Rs2,220, instead of the previous market rate of Rs3,020.
Constitutional Guarantees and Government Resolve
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi emphasized that Article 151 of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the free movement of essential commodities across the country. He stated unequivocally that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will not allow food availability to become hostage to provincial barriers or administrative restrictions. Safeguarding the fundamental rights of the people is a constitutional obligation, and no compromise will be made in this regard, he affirmed.
Transparent Distribution and Strict Monitoring
The Chief Minister stressed that the wheat release process will be carried out with full transparency and strictly in accordance with prescribed procedures. Under this mechanism, wheat will be supplied exclusively to eligible flour mills and authorized dealers. To ensure compliance, an effective system of monitoring and physical verification will be implemented at the district and tehsil levels, guaranteeing that flour is sold at officially notified prices.
Zero Tolerance for Malpractices
Sohail Afridi made it clear that hoarding, profiteering, and overcharging will not be tolerated. Strict and non-discriminatory action will be taken against any individuals or entities found violating government directives. He reaffirmed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's unwavering resolve to stand with its people under all circumstances, ensuring that the interests of the common man are protected without compromise.
