The Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Local Government and Community Development on Wednesday deferred the proposed Punjab Community Justice (Panchayat) Bill, 2025 for further legal scrutiny after reviewing its provisions and consulting the relevant departments.
Committee Deliberations
The meeting, chaired by Muhammad Ashraf Rasool, was informed by MPA Amjad Ali Javed about the legal aspects and potential benefits of the proposed legislation. Following deliberations and consultations with the Local Government Department and the Law Department, the committee decided to postpone consideration of the bill until a more comprehensive legal examination is completed.
Other Public Interest Matters
The committee also discussed several pending public interest matters, including the provision of NADRA services, the distribution of funds, the restoration of the historic Shah Muhammad Ghaus Library, and other pending motions. Members reviewed the latest report regarding the demolition of a minaret at Naulakha Chowk in Tehsil Shahkot.
Concerns Over Minaret Demolition
Expressing concern over the incident, the committee directed the district administration to ensure that legal action is taken in accordance with the law. The committee further instructed the administrative department to ensure transparency in matters relating to NADRA services and the allocation of funds.
Library Restoration Referred
It referred the issue of the restoration of the Shah Muhammad Ghaus Library to the Walled City Authority for necessary action and disposed of the related pending motion.

The meeting was attended by committee members Khurram Khan Warraich, Mehwish Sultana, Syeda Samreen Taj, Rana Tahir Iqbal, and senior officials of the concerned departments.
