Just a few weeks ago, I found myself standing with two friends on one of Lahore's busiest thoroughfares. It was well past midnight, and since dine-in services were restricted, we had opted for takeaway. While waiting for our order, we stepped out of the car. The cool May breeze swept across the nearly empty road, and for a fleeting moment, the city seemed unusually serene.
Diverse Perspectives, Shared Moment
We three came from entirely different backgrounds—different professions, educational paths, and ideological leanings. Yet there we were, casually discussing business, life, and the future, while people walked freely and safely around us in the dead of night.
Then, somehow, our conversation drifted toward Marka-e-Haq and what independence truly signifies. At that instant, all three of us fell silent, suddenly aware of what we were actually experiencing: the freedom to stand openly on our own streets, speak without hesitation, live without fear, and coexist despite our differences. That very feeling embodied Pakistan.
Defence and Resolve
It also struck us that had our nation not possessed a strong defence, and had our people not shown the resilience they demonstrated around this time last year, this very reality might have been different. We often reduce independence to slogans, ceremonies, or political debates. But sometimes, independence is simply the quiet ability to stand safely beneath the night sky of your own city and feel that you truly belong there.
