The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee convened on Tuesday evening to sight the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Muharram-ul-Haram. After receiving testimonies from various parts of the country, the committee officially announced that the moon had been sighted. Consequently, the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram will fall on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
Official Announcement
Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, made the announcement at a press conference in Islamabad. He stated that credible witnesses from different regions confirmed the sighting of the crescent. The committee expressed gratitude for the cooperation of provincial and district moon sighting committees across Pakistan.
Significance of Muharram
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great religious significance for Muslims worldwide. It is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Holy Quran. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala. Muslims observe this period with mourning processions, prayers, and reflection.
Preparations for Ashura
With the announcement of the moon sighting, preparations for Ashura proceedings have begun across the country. Authorities have implemented security measures to ensure peaceful observance. Processions and majalis (gatherings) will be held under strict vigilance to maintain law and order. The government has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
Regional Confirmations
Provincial committees in Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan also confirmed the moon sighting. The consensus among all regions ensures a unified start to the month across Pakistan. The announcement brings clarity for religious events and public holidays associated with Muharram.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee thanked all participants and urged the nation to observe the sacred month with devotion and respect for Islamic traditions.
