Five people were killed in a shooting in the northern German city of Stade on Monday, according to police and media reports. One person has been arrested, a police spokesman told AFP, though he did not provide an exact death toll or further details. Local public broadcaster NDR and tabloid Bild reported that five people died in the incident.
Shooting at youth center
Some reports indicated the shooting took place at a youth center. Police said a major operation was underway in central Stade, a city of about 50,000 people located on the Elbe river, 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Hamburg. “We ask you to leave the area and give it a wide berth for your own safety,” police said in a post on X.
Police response
Emergency services and rescuers were at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. Police have not released further information about the victims or the suspect.
