Gilgit-Baltistan's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Raja Shahbaz Khan announced on Wednesday that the region's long-delayed local government (LG) elections have been scheduled for August 2. The announcement comes after previous postponements due to harsh weather conditions in the region.
Background of the Elections
General elections for the region's legislative assembly were originally scheduled for January 24, 2026, while LG polls - announced after a gap of more than 20 years - were set for February 14, 2026. However, days after the announcements, both were postponed indefinitely due to severe weather conditions.
Recent Preparations
Earlier this month, Khan stated that the G-B Election Commission was preparing to hold the elections but had not yet set a date. The commission has now finalized the schedule, with LG elections set for August 2.
The announcement marks a significant step for local governance in Gilgit-Baltistan, as the region has not held LG elections in over two decades. The elections are expected to empower local communities and improve administrative efficiency.
