PFA Cracks Down on Unsafe Food

In a separate but significant development, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has intensified its campaign against substandard and adulterated food items across the region. During recent inspection drives, the authority took strict action against numerous violators.

Under the directives of the PFA Director General, a team led by the Deputy Director Operations conducted thorough checks in Khanewal and Lodhran districts. The operations covered a wide range of establishments, including:

  • Restaurants and milk shops
  • Grocery stores and drink corners
  • Various food outlets in areas like Pul Gharat, Gol Chowk, Talamba Road, 24-Turn, Kacha Khoo, Liaqat Road Mian Channu, Madni Plaza, and Old Lorry Adda Kabirwala.

The crackdown led to significant seizures and penalties. Authorities confiscated 50 litres of unsafe beverages, 30 kilograms of expired food items, and 15 kilograms of dry powdered materials.

Heavy Fines and Production Halts

The PFA imposed substantial fines on nine food points for serious breaches of food safety laws. In a notable action, the production at a well-known pizza outlet was suspended until necessary improvements are made.

Three restaurants were fined a total of Rs 77,000 for violations including storing expired food and the presence of dead insects in freezers. Furthermore, three grocery and drink corners faced fines amounting to Rs 40,000 for keeping expired beverages in their stock.

In a particularly alarming discovery in Lodhran, a milk shop located in Mouza Gulzar Pur, Dunyapur, was found to be producing counterfeit milk. The fake product was being made using a mixture of powder, ghee, and harmful chemicals. All adulterated material was seized on the spot, and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the owner of the establishment.

The Punjab Food Authority has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the provision of safe and hygienic food to the public. It has urged citizens to actively participate in this mission by reporting any food safety concerns or violations through its official helpline, 1223.
