KP Assembly Session at Cricket Stadium Sparks Opposition Boycott and Criticism

A session of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, convened at a cricket stadium, was largely boycotted by opposition parties, while members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) actively took part in the proceedings. This unusual setting for legislative business has ignited significant political debate and scrutiny over government priorities and spending.

Opposition Meeting and Decision to Boycott

Prior to the session, a meeting of opposition parties was held under the chairmanship of Opposition Leader Dr. Ibadullah. All parliamentary leaders of the opposition attended this gathering, where they collectively decided to boycott the assembly session. Dr. Ibadullah, speaking on the occasion, strongly questioned the rationale behind holding the session at a stadium despite the full availability and functionality of the official assembly building.

He termed the move an unnecessary expense and a cause of inconvenience for the public, describing it as a political show and a display activity orchestrated by the government. Dr. Ibadullah further criticized what he described as excessive arrangements made specifically for the Chief Minister’s speech, labeling them as unjustified and wasteful.

Concerns Over Timing and Resource Allocation

Dr. Ibadullah also raised serious concerns about holding such a large gathering during a period of smart lockdown, calling it questionable from a public health perspective. He noted that the deployment of thousands of police personnel for the event was putting additional strain on law and order resources, while the province is already burdened with significant debt.

He accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of focusing on symbolic politics instead of providing tangible relief to the public. Additionally, he alleged that government resources were being misused to praise the PTI founder, urging authorities to immediately stop wasting taxpayers’ money on such activities.

PPP Participation and Legislative Proceedings

Meanwhile, when the session commenced, PPP lawmakers not only attended but also actively participated in the proceedings of the house. This participation highlighted a split in opposition unity, as other parties maintained their boycott stance.

During the question hour, several issues raised by opposition members were addressed. Specifically, four questions and one calling attention notice submitted by opposition members, covering topics such as fisheries, healthcare services, hydropower projects, and water supply schemes, were referred to the relevant standing committees for further review and action.

The session also included discussions related to Labour Day, emphasizing workers' rights and welfare, though details on these deliberations were limited in the initial reports. This assembly meeting underscores ongoing political tensions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with debates centering on governance, fiscal responsibility, and public representation amidst challenging economic and health conditions.
