Rawalpindi – A major infrastructure initiative aimed at resolving persistent traffic congestion in Gujar Khan saw a headway on Friday as construction work on two underpasses is set to begin following significant voluntary cooperation from local stakeholders.
Voluntary Removal of Kiosks and Chambers
According to Assistant Commissioner Khizar Zahoor, extensive negotiations were held with relevant groups to remove obstacles in the project’s path. As a result, more than 300 roadside kiosks – khokhas – were voluntarily dismantled. The kiosks had been in place for nearly two decades and were considered a major cause of traffic bottlenecks on key roads, noted an official press release.
In a further show of civic responsibility, the legal community of the town also removed approximately 30 chambers that fell within the construction zone, facilitating smooth progress on the project. The administration described the cooperation as a highly positive and commendable development.
Appreciation for Stakeholders
The assistant commissioner appreciated the role of the khokha union and traders’ association, stating that the construction of the underpasses would significantly ease traffic flow while also enhancing the city’s overall urban outlook and infrastructure.
Mirza Taimoor, president of khokha union, stated that the decision to remove the khokhas was taken in the larger public interest. He emphasized continued cooperation with the administration and expressed optimism that the project would improve both traffic conditions and the aesthetic appeal of Gujar Khan.
Similarly, Raja Jawad, president of Traders Association, reaffirmed the business community’s full support for the initiative. He also extended gratitude to the chief minister of Punjab for prioritizing the project and assured that traders would continue to assist in all efforts aimed at the city’s development.
Expected Benefits for Commuters
Local residents believe that upon completion, the underpasses will bring a substantial improvement in traffic management and provide long-term relief to commuters facing daily congestion in Gujar Khan.
