ATLANTA - World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the tournament's early surprises by holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H clash on Monday.
Spain Dominates but Fails to Score
Spain, regarded among the favourites for the title, dominated possession and created the better chances but were repeatedly denied by an inspired Cape Verde defence and goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered a standout performance.
First Half Chances
The Spaniards came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the first half when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar from close range. Moments later, Vozinha reacted brilliantly to tip over Mikel Oyarzabal's header from the rebound.
Second Half Resistance
The Cape Verde goalkeeper continued his heroics after the interval, thwarting further efforts from Torres and Aymeric Laporte as Spain struggled to find a breakthrough.
