Ante Budimir scored his first World Cup goal to give Croatia a 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, a result that keeps Croatia in contention for the knockout stages while ending Panama's hopes of advancing.
Budimir Sees Victory as Turning Point
Budimir, 34, described the win as a turning point in Croatia's campaign after a slow start. "We have started our journey in this tournament now," he said. "Hopefully we learn the right lessons and continue building on this victory."
The match also marked captain Luka Modric's 200th international appearance. Budimir paid tribute to Modric, saying, "We are grateful to have a captain like Luka, a great player and a great person."
Panama Eliminated Despite Strong Showing
Panama suffered their second consecutive 1-0 loss, following a defeat to Ghana, and were eliminated from the tournament. Despite the result, coach Thomas Christiansen expressed pride in his team. "I'm sure people have realised that Panama has great players," Christiansen said. "Hopefully doors will open for them to play in better leagues and stronger teams."
Christiansen praised his players for competing strongly against higher-ranked opponents and believes the tournament has enhanced Panama's reputation on the world stage. He also thanked Canadian supporters and organisers for their hospitality in Toronto, calling the experience "amazing."
Croatia's Decisive Clash Ahead
Croatia now face a decisive match against Ghana, with a win likely securing their place in the next round. Budimir's goal and Modric's milestone have boosted morale as the team looks to build on the victory.
