Infantino Calls 2026 World Cup Most Successful Ever

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised the FIFA World Cup 2026, describing it as the most successful sporting event ever staged as record attendances, packed stadiums and thrilling football continue to captivate fans across North America.

Infantino Hails Expanded Tournament

Speaking to reporters, Infantino said the expanded 48-team tournament has exceeded expectations both on and off the pitch. “This is bigger than anything the world has ever seen,” Infantino said. “Stadiums are full, cities are full and the atmosphere is fantastic. It is beautiful to see so many families, children and women enjoying the World Cup experience.”

Record Attendance Figures

The tournament is on course to surpass the attendance record set at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. After 44 matches, more than 2.85 million spectators had attended games, with stadium occupancy nearing full capacity. A single day’s attendance of 288,007 fans also established a new World Cup record. Infantino thanked supporters for their enthusiasm, both inside stadiums and at FIFA Fan Festivals, while also highlighting the success of the expanded format.

Opportunities for Emerging Nations

He said the competition has showcased established stars while creating opportunities for emerging nations and players to shine on football’s biggest stage.

Defence of Hydration Breaks

The FIFA chief also defended the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks in every match. The three-minute stoppages, held twice during games, were implemented to protect players from heat and ensure equal playing conditions throughout the tournament. “There is no financial benefit for FIFA,” Infantino said. “This is purely a sporting and player welfare decision.” He added that the brief pauses may have helped maintain the high intensity and dramatic finishes seen throughout the competition.
