Iran's World Cup squad has departed from Turkey to Mexico, as confirmed by state television, amid a tense diplomatic standoff between Tehran and Washington. The United States refused to issue visas for several members of the team's support staff, escalating tensions just days before the 2026 World Cup is set to begin on June 11. The tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Departure to Tijuana
The Iranian team took off at approximately 6:10 PM local time, heading to Tijuana in northwest Mexico, where they will be based for the duration of the competition, according to Iranian state TV reports. All three of Iran's group stage matches are scheduled to take place in the United States.
US Visa Refusal
Washington denied visas for several staff members, including officials allegedly linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, all players were granted visas, as per US officials. Iran condemned the move as discriminatory treatment, further straining relations between the two countries.
