Finn Russell, Scotland's star fly-half, has been reinstated to the starting lineup for the upcoming Nations Championship clash against world champions South Africa in Pretoria this Saturday. The 33-year-old British and Irish Lion missed Scotland's first-round victory over Argentina in Cordoba last weekend due to a calf injury.
Russell Replaces Tom Jordan
Russell takes the place of Tom Jordan, who drops to the bench among eight replacements for the Test at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Coach Gregor Townsend has made two additional alterations to his starting XV as Scotland aims to break a nine-match losing streak against the record four-time Rugby World Cup champions.
Changes in the Tight Five
Both changes occur within the tight five: tighthead prop Zander Fagerson replaces Elliot Millar Mills, and lock Gregor Brown is promoted in place of Jonny Gray. Mills and Gray have been omitted entirely from the matchday 23, while Townsend has reshuffled his bench. Scotland will play in South Africa for the first time since a 55-6 drubbing in Gqeberha 12 years ago.
Promoted to the bench are forwards Will Hurd, Josh Bayliss, and Magnus Bradbury, along with back Stafford McDowall. Notably, there is no specialist scrum-half among the replacements, so wing Jamie Dobie will serve as cover for starting No. 9 Ben White.
Captain and Historical Context
Inside centre Sione Tuipulotu, who was one of seven Scottish try scorers in Argentina, will captain the side. Scotland have lost all seven previous Tests against the Springboks in South Africa, and this will be their first match in Pretoria, home of the Bulls club.
