Shaheen Afridi Defends Pakistan's Pitch Strategy After ODI Win

LAHORE: Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has defended the team’s pitch strategy and praised a collective effort after guiding the national side to a 2-1 ODI series victory over Australia, insisting that every successful team uses home conditions to its advantage.

Speaking at the post-match media talk, Shaheen said the triumph was the result of teamwork, planning and disciplined execution in challenging conditions. “It was a complete team effort throughout the series. The conditions were not easy for batting, but our players adapted well and used the home advantage effectively.”

Responding to criticism over the nature of the pitches used during the series, Shaheen said preparing conditions that suit the home side is a standard practice in international cricket. “Every team prepares pitches according to its strengths when playing at home,” Shaheen said. “Our objective was to win the series. When we tour Australia, we play on green and bouncy pitches that favour their bowlers. You cannot offer those same conditions to them when they come here.”

The left-arm pacer stressed that Pakistan’s long-term planning remains focused on developing players capable of performing in different environments ahead of future global events. “There is still considerable time before the next World Cup. We will continue exposing players to different conditions through upcoming tours and international assignments so they can become more adaptable and versatile,” he said.

Shaheen also highlighted the importance of continuity in team selection, revealing that the management deliberately avoided frequent changes during the series. “We wanted to give players confidence by backing them consistently. When players receive regular opportunities, they are more likely to perform and contribute positively to the team.”

He reserved special praise for all-rounder Shadab Khan, whose performances played a key role in the series victory despite facing criticism in recent months. “Many people questioned Shadab’s place in the team, but experienced players are the ones who deliver in pressure situations. He bowled with excellent control and made an important contribution when the team needed him most.”

He also commended young bowlers who were given opportunities during the series, saying the experience gained would benefit Pakistan in the future. Reflecting on the bowling unit’s success, Shaheen said the attack executed its plans effectively by maintaining pressure and restricting Australia’s scoring opportunities. “Our bowlers worked hard throughout the series and consistently applied pressure. That was one of the major reasons behind our success,” he added.

While celebrating Pakistan’s third consecutive ODI series win over Australia, Shaheen adopted a measured approach when asked about future ICC events. “It is too early to make predictions about the World Cup,” he said. “Right now, our focus is on improving as a team, addressing weaknesses and building a stronger combination for the challenges ahead.”

The captain concluded by dedicating the series victory to the players, coaching staff and supporters, saying their collective efforts had made the achievement possible. “The credit belongs to the entire team, the coaching staff and the fans. Everyone contributed, and together, we were able to achieve a memorable series win against Australia,” he said.
