Pakistan cricket is set for a significant administrative and coaching reshuffle, with former captain Younis Khan likely to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach of the national Test side, according to sources within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The anticipated changes are part of a broader restructuring plan under consideration by the PCB, which also includes former all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez being entrusted with the role of Director of International Cricket. The developments, if finalized, would mark one of the most notable revamps in Pakistan cricket's management structure in recent years.
Sarfaraz Ahmed's Tenure and Recent Struggles
Sarfaraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to their historic ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2017, was appointed as Test head coach earlier this year. His tenure began with a challenging two-match away Test series against Bangladesh, part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. However, Pakistan endured a difficult outing, suffering a 2-0 series whitewash, its second consecutive Test series defeat against the same opposition in recent times. The poor results have triggered internal discussions within the PCB regarding the direction of the red-ball team. Sources suggest that dissatisfaction with the team's recent performances has accelerated plans for changes in leadership roles, both on and off the field.
Possible Captaincy Change
In parallel, there is growing speculation that Pakistan's Test captaincy may also undergo a transition. Shan Masood, who has led the side in the longest format, is reportedly under consideration for replacement following the back-to-back series defeats. All-rounder Salman Ali Agha is being discussed as a potential candidate to take over the leadership role, though no final decision has been announced.
PCB's New Direction
According to insiders, the PCB is now leaning toward a model that places greater responsibility in the hands of experienced former international cricketers, with Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez expected to play central roles in shaping Pakistan's future cricketing direction. This strategic shift aims to leverage the expertise of seasoned players to revive the team's performance in Test cricket.
