Farmers Urged to Follow Wheat Guidelines for Better Harvest

Agriculture Department Issues Critical Guidelines for Wheat Harvesting and Storage

The Agriculture Department has issued a strong advisory to farmers, emphasizing the strict adherence to wheat-related guidelines released by the Punjab Agriculture Department. This initiative aims to secure higher yields and ensure safe storage practices, crucial for maintaining crop quality and minimizing post-harvest losses.

Expert Recommendations for Optimal Harvesting

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain Bhatti, Assistant Director of Agriculture for Sambrial, provided detailed recommendations. He highlighted that wheat harvesting should ideally be conducted using reapers or combine harvesters wherever feasible. This modern approach not only enhances efficiency but also helps in preserving the integrity of the grains.

Dr. Bhatti stressed the importance of timing, advising farmers to harvest wheat only when the crop has reached full maturity. Additionally, he urged farmers to align their harvesting schedules with weather forecasts to avoid potential damage from adverse conditions.

Essential Storage Practices to Prevent Losses

Proper storage is a key component of the guidelines. Dr. Bhatti emphasized that storage areas must be completely vacated and thoroughly cleaned before the arrival of the new crop. Only clean, well-ventilated warehouses should be utilized for wheat storage to prevent contamination and spoilage.

Furthermore, he advised reducing the moisture content of wheat to approximately 10 percent before storage, a critical step to inhibit mold growth and maintain grain quality. Farmers are also encouraged to use new, dry sacks that have been treated with pesticides recommended by the Agriculture Department, ensuring protection against pests during storage.

Weather-Responsive Harvesting Strategies

In cases where rainfall is anticipated, Dr. Bhatti recommended specific measures to minimize damage. Farmers should tie smaller bundles after harvesting and stack them with the ears facing upward. This technique helps in reducing moisture absorption and preserving the crop's condition until it can be properly stored.

By following these comprehensive guidelines, farmers can significantly improve their wheat yields and ensure the longevity of their harvests, contributing to overall agricultural productivity in the region.
