In a significant move to diversify agriculture and stimulate economic growth, Punjab's Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given the official nod to a large-scale initiative aimed at promoting aquaculture, with a special emphasis on shrimp cultivation. This project, described as the province's most ambitious Blue Economy venture to date, seeks to transform unproductive land into hubs of agricultural productivity.
Project Scope and Immediate Progress
The cornerstone of the plan involves the development of dedicated shrimp farming estates spanning a total of 5,600 acres across the districts of Sargodha and Alipur. The objective is to utilize modern aquaculture techniques to convert barren and saline land into profitable farmland. Recent progress reports indicate swift on-ground development.
According to the 15th daily progress report for the Sargodha project, nine shrimp ponds have already been completed covering an area of 20 acres. Furthermore, 5,320 metres of drainage infrastructure has been finalized, ensuring proper water management for the farms. Surveys for an additional 10 acres have been completed, paving the way for the next phase of expansion.
Building Technical Capacity and Infrastructure
The government is simultaneously investing in critical support infrastructure to ensure the project's long-term success. A quality control laboratory being set up in Lahore at a cost of Rs 4.5 billion is 99% complete. Another facility in Muzaffargarh, intended for shrimp farming research and to foster a conducive environment for aquaculture, has reached 98% completion.
To build local expertise, Pakistani experts have participated in training visits to countries like Saudi Arabia and Mexico. International specialists, including Jeffrey and Jamie Dominguez, have also visited Pakistan to provide technical guidance. Written examinations have been conducted for 100 interns selected to be part of the shrimp farming program, highlighting the focus on skill development.
On the infrastructure front, installation work is progressing rapidly with 32 tubewells and eight transformers already in place. In a promising development for research, shrimp seed has been introduced into 64 research ponds. Work is also ongoing to develop additional shrimp estates and related value chains in both Sargodha and Muzaffargarh.
Economic Impact and Future Vision
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has emphasized that this aquaculture initiative is poised to significantly boost Punjab's export potential. She highlighted that the project will generate thousands of employment opportunities, providing a substantial economic lift to the region. By tapping into the potential of the Blue Economy, Punjab aims to create a new, sustainable revenue stream while making optimal use of previously non-arable land.
This comprehensive approach—combining land development, infrastructure building, international knowledge exchange, and local workforce training—marks a strategic shift towards innovative agricultural practices in the province, setting a precedent for future economic and agricultural projects.
