Punjab Police Deploys 30,000 for Muharram Security

LAHORE – Punjab Police deployed more than 30,000 officers and personnel across the province on the 2nd of Muharram-ul-Haram to provide security for 88 mourning processions and 3,683 religious gatherings (majalis), officials said on Thursday.

According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, 8 processions and 399 majalis were held in Lahore, while over 16,000 community volunteers assisted law enforcement agencies in maintaining security arrangements. Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem stated that security remains on high alert across the province during Ashra-e-Muharram, with strict enforcement of Section 144 imposed by the provincial government.

He emphasized that aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material, and provocative activities are strictly prohibited, while processions and gatherings are only permitted on designated routes and venues. The IG Punjab said security arrangements are being monitored through Safe Cities cameras and district administration systems.

Personnel from the CTD, Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU), and other field formations have been deployed for Muharram security duties. He further directed regional and district police officers to remain in close coordination with procession organizers, religious scholars, and community leaders, adding that district control rooms remain linked with the Central Police Office for continuous monitoring and rapid response.
