The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has launched a comprehensive water supply upgradation drive to ensure uninterrupted water availability during the upcoming summer season. The initiative aims to address long-standing issues of water scarcity and improve the distribution network across the cantonment areas.
Scope of the Upgradation Project
The project involves replacing aging pipelines, installing new water pumps, and repairing existing infrastructure. RCB officials stated that the drive focuses on areas that have historically faced acute water shortages, especially during peak summer months. The upgrade is expected to benefit thousands of residents by increasing water pressure and reducing wastage.
Key Components of the Drive
- Pipeline Replacement: Over 15 kilometers of old, rusted pipes will be replaced with durable, high-quality materials to prevent leaks and contamination.
- New Pumping Stations: Two new pumping stations are being set up to boost water supply to high-altitude zones.
- Water Storage Tanks: Additional storage tanks with a combined capacity of 500,000 gallons are being installed to ensure reserve supply during peak demand.
- Leakage Repair: A dedicated team is conducting surveys to identify and fix major leakage points, which currently waste an estimated 20% of the total supply.
Timeline and Implementation
RCB has set a target to complete the upgradation work before the onset of extreme summer heat in June. The project is being executed in phases to minimize disruption to daily life. Residents have been informed about scheduled water cuts in specific sectors during the installation process.

Community Response and Future Plans

RCB has announced that after the current upgradation, a second phase will be launched to introduce smart water meters and a digital monitoring system for real-time leak detection and consumption tracking.
The drive is funded through RCB's annual development budget, with an allocation of PKR 250 million for the current fiscal year. The board has assured that all work will adhere to quality standards and be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
