Scientific Farming Key to Higher Cotton Yields, Says Research Director

In a recent address, Director Sabahat Hussain of the Central Cotton Research Institute emphasized the critical importance of adopting scientific methods to achieve higher cotton yields. She highlighted that modern agricultural practices not only enhance crop growth but also ensure more consistent and improved production outcomes for farmers across the region.

Land Preparation and Soil Management

For optimal results, farmers were advised to prepare their land using laser levelers, a technique that significantly conserves water and reduces fertilizer usage by ensuring even distribution. Additionally, for hard or compacted soils, chisel ploughing was recommended to break up soil layers, thereby promoting better root growth and overall plant health.

Weed Control and Seed Selection

To combat weeds effectively, Hussain suggested applying herbicides such as Pendimethalin or S-metolachlor within 24 hours of sowing. She strongly emphasized the use of certified and triple gene cotton varieties, which offer superior resistance to pests and diseases, leading to higher yields and reduced crop losses.

Seed Rate and Treatment Guidelines

According to official recommendations, seed rates should be adjusted based on germination rates. For ridge sowing, farmers should use 4.5 to 6 kilograms of seed per acre, while drill sowing requires 9 to 12 kilograms. It is also prudent to keep an extra 10% of seeds as a reserve. Seed treatment with Imidacloprid and Tebuconazole was described as essential for protecting young plants from pests during the early growth stages.

Planting Techniques and Disease Prevention

Hussain further advised sowing cotton in north-south rows with a plant spacing of 9 inches to minimize wind damage and improve air circulation. Farmers were cautioned to closely monitor weather conditions and avoid planting in fields previously used for crops like okra or eggplant, as this can help prevent the spread of diseases and maintain soil health.

In a separate development, the Prime Minister has directed a fast-track push for electric vehicles to reduce fuel imports, signaling a broader shift towards sustainable practices in the country.
