The Sindh Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has called for a decisive crackdown on the sale of substandard fertilizers across the province. During a meeting chaired by PAC Chairman Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, concerns were raised over the widespread availability of low-quality fertilizers that are detrimental to crop yields and farmer livelihoods.
Committee's Stance on Fertilizer Quality
The PAC expressed serious concern over the proliferation of substandard fertilizers in the market, which not only harm agricultural productivity but also exploit farmers financially. Members stressed the need for strict enforcement of quality standards and immediate action against those involved in the production and distribution of fake or inferior fertilizers.
Impact on Agriculture
Substandard fertilizers can lead to poor crop growth, reduced yields, and soil degradation. Farmers, already facing challenges from climate change and rising input costs, are particularly vulnerable to such malpractices. The committee emphasized that ensuring access to genuine, high-quality fertilizers is essential for food security and the economic well-being of the agricultural sector.
Recommendations for Action
The PAC recommended that the Sindh government and relevant departments launch a province-wide inspection drive to identify and seal outlets selling substandard fertilizers. It also called for legal proceedings against violators, including hefty fines and license revocations. Additionally, the committee urged the agriculture department to conduct awareness campaigns to educate farmers about identifying genuine products.
Chairman Khuhro directed the authorities to submit a comprehensive report on the steps taken within two weeks. He warned that any negligence in curbing the sale of substandard fertilizers would be met with strict accountability.
The meeting was attended by members of the PAC and senior officials from the agriculture and food departments, who assured the committee of their full cooperation in implementing the directives.
