IMF Board to Consider $1.2 Billion Pakistan Disbursement in Coming Weeks

The International Monetary Fund's Executive Board will meet in the coming weeks to consider a $1.2 billion loan disbursement for Pakistan, an IMF official confirmed on Sunday.

Pakistan and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement (SLA) in March 2026 covering the $7 billion, 37-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program and a separate $1.4 billion, 28-month Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) loan. Upon board approval, Pakistan would receive approximately $1 billion under the EFF and $210 million under the RSF, bringing total disbursements under both arrangements to about $4.5 billion.

Pakistani media reported that the IMF had scheduled a board meeting for May 8, but IMF Resident Representative Mahir Binici told Arab News that no final date has been set. "The IMF Executive Board meeting will be taking place in coming weeks to discuss the SLA reached on Mar. 27," Binici said.

The EFF, secured in September 2024, and the RSF, secured in May 2025, are critical for stabilizing Pakistan's fragile economy. The country has implemented major reforms, including removing fuel subsidies, broadening the tax base, privatizing state-owned enterprises, and overhauling the power sector, as required by the IMF.

Islamabad views these programs as essential to avoid a balance-of-payments crisis and address macroeconomic challenges such as low foreign exchange reserves and a weak currency. The IMF noted in March that Pakistan's policies have strengthened the economy and rebuilt market confidence. However, it warned that the Iran war poses risks to Pakistan's outlook due to volatile energy prices and tighter global financial conditions, which could fuel inflation and weigh on growth.
