PIA Implements Fuel Surcharge Hike Amid Gulf Crisis, Cancels 165 Flights
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced a significant increase in fuel surcharges on both domestic and international routes, citing a sharp rise in fuel costs driven by the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. According to airline officials and flight data, this move comes as regional air routes face severe disruptions, leading to approximately 300 flight cancellations from Pakistan in recent days.
Fuel Costs Surge 34% Due to Gulf Conflict
PIA spokesman Abdullah Khan confirmed to Reuters that fuel expenses have escalated by 34% as a direct result of the Gulf crisis. In response, the airline is raising fuel surcharges by $20 on domestic flights and up to $100 on international flights. This adjustment aims to offset the mounting financial pressures from higher jet fuel prices and operational challenges.
Khan further disclosed that over the past 12 days, PIA has canceled 165 flights, with Gulf-bound flights accounting for 34% of the airline's total operations. The cancellations highlight the significant impact of the conflict on aviation, as most international flights operated by Pakistani carriers are directed toward the Middle East, making them particularly vulnerable to airspace closures and route disruptions.
