The Rescue 1122 service treated a total of 54,247 mourners during religious gatherings and processions across Punjab province during the first 10 days of Muharram, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.
At least 52,731 mourners who sustained injuries during self-flagellation rituals received first aid at the scene, while 1,516 others with more severe injuries were transported to hospitals for further medical care. The department responded to over 67,610 emergencies across the province during this period.
Breakdown of Emergencies Handled
The emergencies included 47,726 medical cases, 12,189 road traffic accidents, 840 fire incidents, and 13,224 other types of emergencies. Officials stated that over 12,000 rescuers were deployed, supported by 896 ambulances, 2,300 motorbikes, and 316 fire and rescue vehicles to provide emergency coverage for the religious events.
Districts with Highest Number of Mourners Treated
Rescue authorities reported that the highest number of mourners requiring medical assistance was in Multan, with 3,631 cases, followed by Dera Ghazi Khan (3,190), Faisalabad (3,053), Hafizabad (2,847), Muzaffargarh (2,506), Jhang (2,478), and Sheikhupura (2,305).
Government Officials Commend Peaceful Observance
Punjab Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique, during a visit to the Home Department's central control room, said that the province remained peaceful due to coordinated efforts by all institutions and cooperation from citizens and religious leaders. Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim confirmed that no major untoward incident was reported in the province during the period.
