The Iranian consulate in Hyderabad, India, has mocked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after he shared photos of his visit to the Taj Mahal during a recent trip to India. Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette, toured the iconic marble mausoleum as part of a four-day official visit. In the visitor's log, he described the Taj Mahal as "one of the world's most romantic treasures."
Consulate's Criticism
In a post on social media platform X, the Iranian consulate criticized Rubio, calling him "ignorant of history" and arguing that the monument reflects Iran's cultural and architectural legacy. The consulate wrote, "If Rubio were well-versed in history or architecture, he wouldn't have stopped to take a photo in front of this memorial."
The post further stated, "This memorial was built out of love for the wife of an Iranian emperor, and designed by Iranian architectural geniuses, while his government today threatens to destroy Iranian civilization and insults other civilizations."
Reactions Online
The consulate's post quickly circulated online, drawing a wide range of reactions across social media platforms. Many users engaged in debates about the historical origins of the Taj Mahal and the current geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran.
The incident highlights the ongoing cultural and political friction between the two nations, even as Rubio's visit to India aimed to strengthen bilateral ties.
