Eight police personnel sustained minor injuries on Wednesday during a counterterror operation in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, according to a police statement. The incident occurred in the Karak district as law enforcement launched a search-and-strike operation aimed at maintaining public order and security.
Joint Operation and Exchange of Fire
The operation was conducted jointly by local police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). During the mission, militants opened fire on the police team from an elevated mountain range, triggering a fierce gunbattle. Karak Police reported that several terrorists were either killed or wounded in the intense firefight.
“Reports indicate that several terrorists were killed or injured in the intense exchange of fire,” the statement read. “As a result of the terrorist attack, eight police personnel sustained minor injuries and were immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.”
Reinforcements and Security Measures
Upon receiving information about the attack, additional police contingents led by District Police Officer Karak Imran Khan swiftly arrived at the scene. Authorities launched a pursuit, search, and clearance operation to track down the fleeing militants. Security has been further tightened at all entry and exit points in the district.
While Karak Police did not name any specific group responsible for the attack, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has historically carried out deadly assaults against law enforcement and civilians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The TTP remains a significant security threat in the region.
Regional Tensions
Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of providing safe havens to TTP militants, a charge that Kabul denies. The rise in militant attacks has strained relations between the two neighbors since the Afghan Taliban seized power in 2021. The ongoing violence underscores the persistent challenges facing Pakistan's counterterrorism efforts in the northwestern region.
