Trump Accuses Iran of Seeking Strait of Hormuz Closure to 'Save Face'
US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Iran desires to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed primarily to "save face" in the ongoing geopolitical standoff. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump elaborated on the situation, highlighting economic and strategic dimensions.
Economic and Strategic Claims by Trump
Trump asserted, "Iran doesn’t want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it open so they can make $500 Million Dollars a day (which is, therefore, what they are losing if it is closed!). They only say they want it closed because I have it totally blockaded (closed!), so they merely want to 'save face'." This statement underscores his view that Iran's public stance is driven by political posturing rather than genuine intent, given the significant daily revenue loss from closure.
He further revealed, "People approached me four days ago, saying, 'Sir, Iran wants to open up the Strait, immediately.' But if we do that, there can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their Country, their leaders included!" This comment suggests internal discussions about potential negotiations, but Trump emphasized a hardline approach, linking any deal to broader military actions.
Iran's Military Readiness and Ceasefire Developments
Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's military declared its forces are "ready and on the trigger" if the US launches an attack, signaling heightened tensions in the region. This warning came as Trump announced an extension of Washington's ceasefire with Iran, aimed at allowing Tehran time to prepare a "unified proposal" following a request by Pakistani officials.
Pakistan played a pivotal role in facilitating talks, hosting discussions between the US and Iran on April 11-12. This followed Pakistan's brokering of a two-week ceasefire on April 8, which was initially set to expire on Wednesday evening Washington time. Efforts are currently underway for another round of negotiations, although uncertainty persists regarding the outcomes and future diplomatic engagements.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides maintaining firm positions. Trump's remarks and Iran's military alertness highlight the delicate balance in US-Iran relations, influenced by economic interests, regional stability, and international mediation efforts led by countries like Pakistan.
