Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has questioned the federal government’s economic performance, asking why key reforms have not been implemented over the past four years. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, he said the government had failed to introduce meaningful reforms in the tax system through the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), despite its constitutional responsibilities, including meeting defence requirements.
Criticism of Economic Management
He said the depreciation of the rupee and overall economic mismanagement reflected governance failures. He added that promised reforms in pensions, expenditure control, and broader economic restructuring had not been implemented. Gohar further said no substantial progress had been made in sectors such as retail, real estate, and agriculture despite repeated commitments.
Fiscal Concerns and NFC Award
On fiscal matters, he said shifting financial burdens onto provinces amounted to an admission of federal failure. He maintained that reducing provincial shares under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award after the 18th Constitutional Amendment would be unconstitutional. He also said the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was responsible for protecting provincial resources and rights, adding that public concern over economic issues was increasing.
Call for Unity
Calling for unity, Gohar urged all political parties to adopt a joint stance on the NFC Award, saying it was a constitutional and financial matter rather than a political dispute. He added that internal differences within PTI would be resolved through dialogue and that the party remained united behind its nominated leadership.
