Medical Team Conducts Examination of Imran Khan at Adiala Jail
A specialized medical team comprising senior doctors from leading hospitals in Islamabad arrived at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Sunday to conduct a comprehensive medical examination of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The team, which included experts such as Dr. Amjad, Dr. Nadeem Qureshi, Dr. Sikandar, and Dr. Rafiq, had been waiting inside the facility since 2:30 PM, with an invitation extended to representatives of PTI's leadership to attend the check-up.
Despite the government's invitation and the extended waiting period, no party leader arrived to witness the examination. Consequently, the medical check-up proceeded without their presence. Adiala Jail Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum confirmed that the team, equipped with necessary medical instruments and medicines, had arrived with full arrangements for a thorough assessment under strict security protocols.
Eye Examination and Medical Report Details
The examination included an eye check-up supervised by a medical board, as part of the ongoing efforts to address Imran Khan's health concerns. Authorities noted that a medical report detailing the findings is expected to be compiled soon. Earlier in the day, Adiala Jail authorities had forwarded Imran Khan's prison medical record to the Punjab Home Department.
This documentation includes a complete chart of vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood sugar levels, recorded three times daily by on-duty doctors. Additionally, a report on his eye condition, along with consultation reports and details of the medical staff involved in his care, was included. The records specify the timing and identities of the doctors who conducted previous examinations.
Government Announcements and Humanitarian Grounds
On Saturday, the federal government announced plans to shift Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to a hospital and form a medical board to oversee his condition, citing humanitarian grounds. This decision comes amid reports that Imran Khan has lost 85% of his eyesight during his prolonged incarceration. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry emphasized that the government prioritizes humanitarian considerations and legal requirements, urging against politicizing health matters.
In a separate announcement, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar stated that Imran Khan's eye treatment would be conducted at a specialized hospital by ophthalmology experts, with a detailed report to be submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Both ministers called for an end to baseless propaganda and political point-scoring, stressing the importance of national seriousness and tolerance.
Supreme Court Orders and Opposition Protests
The Supreme Court had previously ordered that Imran Khan be given access to an eye specialist and allowed to speak with his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, who reside in the United Kingdom. This followed a report by his lawyer, Salman Safdar, appointed as amicus curiae, which expressed dissatisfaction with the medical facilities in jail and highlighted Imran Khan's serious concerns about his eye condition.
In response to these developments, opposition party lawmakers continued their sit-in at Parliament House for a second day, demanding that Imran Khan be shifted to a hospital. The protest led to the closure of all routes to Parliament House, with heavy police deployment and prisoner vans in the area. Similar protests occurred outside the K-P House, with roads blocked and senior police officials present.
K-P former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur stated that their primary demand is proper treatment for Imran Khan under the supervision of his personal physician or a family member. Incumbent Chief Minister Sohail Afridi added that social media posts by federal ministers do not guarantee this, and the sit-in would end only if such conditions are met, otherwise, future actions would be decided collectively with party leadership.
