The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a significant weather warning for the province, forecasting a period of severe conditions. The authority announced that thunderstorms and mountain snowfall are expected across most districts from December 30 to January 1.
Widespread Impact Across Multiple Districts
In an official statement released on Saturday, the PDMA alerted all deputy commissioners and relevant departments to initiate safety measures immediately. The weather alert indicates that numerous areas will be affected. Chitral, Swat, Abbottabad, and Bajaur are among the key regions likely to experience intermittent rain and thunderstorms during this three-day period.
The forecast extends to other major cities as well, including Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu, and both North and South Waziristan. This widespread alert underscores the potential for significant disruption across the province.
Serious Risks of Road Closures and Landslides
The PDMA highlighted specific and dangerous consequences of the impending weather. Heavy snowfall is predicted to make roads treacherous, with a high likelihood of closures in popular tourist destinations such as Naran, Kaghan, and the Galiyat region.
More critically, the authority warned of a serious risk of landslides and avalanches in mountainous areas. To mitigate urban flooding, relevant agencies have been instructed to clear drainage systems and ensure large billboards are securely fastened. A constant vigil on the water levels of rivers and streams has also been ordered.
Essential Advice for the Public and Tourists
Recognizing the dangers, the PDMA has issued crucial guidance for citizens and travelers. Tourists and those planning to travel to snowy areas are strongly advised to carry ample supplies:
- Plenty of water and food
- Necessary medicines
- Warm clothing
The general public is urged to exercise extreme caution during strong winds or heavy storms. People should stay away from electric poles, signage, and old or structurally weak buildings to avoid accidents.
A PDMA spokesperson confirmed that the authority's emergency control center will remain operational 24 hours a day throughout this period. Anyone requiring information or assistance can contact the toll-free helpline at 1700.
