Punjab Government Intensifies Fight Against Food Adulteration
The Punjab government has ramped up its campaign against unsafe food practices across Lahore, acting under the directives of the Chief Minister’s Healthy Punjab Mission. In a significant enforcement drive, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) carried out rigorous inspections targeting numerous food businesses to safeguard public health from substandard and hazardous products.
Widespread Inspections Uncover Serious Violations
During the extensive operations, PFA teams scrutinized 98 prominent food outlets throughout the city. The authority did not hesitate to take strict action, resulting in the sealing of one unit and the registration of one First Information Report (FIR) for serious legal breaches. Furthermore, 10 food businesses were collectively fined Rs 260,000 for failing to comply with established food safety standards.
The crackdown led to the immediate confiscation and destruction of a large quantity of unfit consumables. Among the items destroyed were 800 litres of adulterated milk, 105 litres of substandard beverages, and 4 maunds of rotten vegetables. Inspectors also seized expired raw materials and the prohibited China salt, which poses a known health risk.
Major Action in Muslim Town and Public Health Warning
A particularly notable action occurred in Muslim Town, where authorities intercepted a milk supplier's tanker. They disposed of an additional 800 litres of adulterated milk and followed the seizure with a formal case registration against the supplier.
The inspections revealed alarming hygiene conditions at several establishments. PFA teams reported the absence of essential operational records and employees working without mandatory medical fitness certificates. The premises exhibited gross neglect, including fungus-infected freezers, dirty and broken floors, and the use of contaminated water for washing meat. In multiple kitchens, inspectors found rusted utensils and clear evidence of insect infestation.
Official Stance and Public Advisory
PFA Director General Asim Javed emphasized the severe risks that substandard and harmful ingredients pose to public health. He stated that the authority is actively working, as directed by the Chief Minister of Punjab, to elevate all stages of food production and supply chains to international standards. DG Javed affirmed that strict action against food adulteration will continue unabated.
He also issued a crucial advisory, urging citizens to be vigilant. The public is encouraged to read product labels carefully before purchasing any food items. To help in this public health mission, citizens have been advised to report any suspected violations directly to the PFA helpline at 1223.
