Arts Council Karachi Hosts Sri Lankan Dance Show 'Kanya'

The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Karachi, hosted the acclaimed Sri Lankan dance show “Kanya” at Auditorium I, bringing together diplomats, cultural figures, and art enthusiasts for an evening celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.

Distinguished Guests and Ceremonial Opening

The event was attended by President of the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, Mohammad Ahmed Shah; Consul General of Sri Lanka, Sanjeewa Pattiwila; the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh; the Consul General of Iraq; the Acting Deputy High Commissioner of the United Kingdom; the Acting Consul General of China; the Deputy Consul General of Thailand; the Consul General of Afghanistan; FRG Group CEO Mohammad Dochki; Ruwan Wijekoon, along with other distinguished guests and a large audience.

The ceremony commenced with the national anthems of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, followed by the traditional Sri Lankan Oil Lamp Lighting Ceremony, in which the dignitaries participated. The ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp symbolizes friendship, unity, prosperity, and cultural harmony. The programme was organized to further strengthen the cultural ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Remarks by Leaders

Welcoming the guests, Mohammad Ahmed Shah, President of the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka share longstanding and cordial relations, with diplomatic and cultural cooperation continuing to grow stronger over the years. He remarked that such cultural exchanges play a vital role in enhancing mutual understanding and reinforcing diplomatic and cultural relations between the two countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General of Sri Lanka, Sanjeewa Pattiwila, expressed his delight at being at the Arts Council, stating that the evening celebrated the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He said both countries continue to strengthen their relationship through cultural diplomacy, adding that “Kanya” beautifully showcases the vibrant colours, traditions, and artistic spirit of Sri Lankan culture. He also thanked the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi and all supporting institutions for making the event possible.

Captivating Performances

The evening featured captivating performances by a distinguished dance ensemble led by renowned Sri Lankan choreographer and dance director Chandana Wickramasinghe. The troupe presented a series of spectacular performances, including Ukusa (Rhythm), Naga Raksha, Ragum Gee, Radhamanjali, Peacock (Fusion in Blue), Thelme, Hoiya Hoiya, Ridhma Rata, Abhisheka, Salina Lelina, and Rathna Deepa Janmabhoomi, each reflecting the richness, diversity, and artistic excellence of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

The audience warmly applauded the performances, which vividly portrayed the country’s traditional dance forms while incorporating contemporary artistic expression.
