Argentina's Milei Endorses US-Israel Military Campaign Against Iran
Argentine President Javier Milei has publicly declared that the joint United States and Israel military campaign against Iran represents "the right thing to do," during his third presidential visit to Jerusalem. The libertarian leader made this statement while signing onto the Isaac Accords, an initiative designed to deepen bilateral relations between Israel and Latin American nations.
Firm Support Against Iranian Regime
In a joint declaration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Milei reaffirmed Argentina's unwavering support for the military campaign targeting Iran. He referenced his government's previous decision to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization as justification for this position.
"We expressed our firm support for the United States and Israel in their war against terrorism and against the Iranian regime, not only because it is the right thing to do, but because our countries are brothers in suffering," Milei stated emphatically.
Historical Context of Argentine-Iranian Tensions
The Argentine president specifically cited two devastating terrorist attacks that have shaped his nation's perspective:
- The 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured over 300
- The 1992 explosion at the Israeli embassy that resulted in 29 fatalities and 200 injuries
Argentine judicial authorities have attributed both attacks to Iranian operatives, though Iran has consistently denied involvement and refused to extradite suspects. "To this day, we still demand justice," Milei emphasized, highlighting his alignment with both Netanyahu and former US President Donald Trump.
Diplomatic and Practical Agreements
During the visit, several significant agreements were finalized:
- Isaac Accords Participation: Argentina joined the US-backed initiative that mirrors the Abraham Accords, aiming to normalize and strengthen Israel's relationships with Latin American countries
- Embassy Relocation Commitment: Milei reiterated Argentina's intention to move its embassy to Jerusalem "as soon as conditions allow"
- Transportation Enhancement: The two nations signed an agreement to launch direct flights between Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv starting November
Milei described the direct flight agreement as cementing "an unbreakable bond" between Argentina and Israel.
Symbolic Gestures and International Reactions
Earlier on Sunday, Milei visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City, considered Judaism's holiest prayer site. This marked his third visit to the location, having previously visited in February 2024 and June 2025.
Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Milei's stance, stating the Argentine leader had demonstrated "moral clarity" by supporting Israel. "President Milei... has shown that by standing up with the Jewish people, standing up against anti-Semitic vilifications, standing up in our hour of need, standing up when we fight the battle of civilization against barbarism," Netanyahu declared.
Argentina hosts Latin America's largest Jewish community, with approximately 300,000 members primarily residing in Buenos Aires. This demographic reality adds significant weight to Milei's diplomatic positioning and his government's foreign policy decisions regarding Middle Eastern conflicts.
