Pakistan, China Co-Host UNSC Meeting on Resolution Implementation

Pakistan and China jointly convened a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Arria-Formula meeting to examine how the world body can ensure the full, effective and non-selective implementation of its resolutions, the Foreign Office said in a statement on Thursday.

What is the Arria-Formula Meeting?

An Arria-Formula meeting is an informal UNSC format that allows members to hold candid discussions with UN officials, experts and stakeholders on issues affecting international peace and security. This format enables a more flexible exchange of views compared to formal sessions.

Pakistan's Stance on UNSC Resolutions

Addressing the meeting, Pakistan's Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said UNSC resolutions were legal obligations under the UN Charter rather than mere expressions of intent. He emphasized that selective implementation undermines the credibility of the Council and the UN system as a whole.

Joint Efforts for Effective Implementation

The meeting highlighted the importance of collective action to ensure that resolutions are implemented without bias or double standards. Both Pakistan and China stressed the need for the UNSC to uphold its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security through consistent and fair application of its decisions.
