Explosions in Kyiv as Russian Missiles Target Capital

Multiple explosions were heard across Kyiv on Thursday as an air alert sounded, minutes after authorities warned of Russian ballistic missiles heading toward the Ukrainian capital. AFP journalists on the ground reported seeing smoke trails in the sky above Kyiv.

Air Defense Active, Debris Reported

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on Telegram that air defense systems were operational and urged residents to take shelter. In a separate statement, he said, “In the Darnytskyi district, missile debris fell in an open area. Emergency services are heading to the scene.” Darnytskyi is a densely populated residential neighborhood on the left bank of the Dnieper River, which divides the capital.

Context of Ongoing Russian Attacks

Russia has launched drone and missile barrages on Ukraine almost nightly since its full-scale invasion began in 2022. Over the past year, Kyiv has been a frequent target, with attacks killing civilians and damaging historic landmarks. Thursday's incident underscores the continued threat to the capital despite Ukrainian air defense efforts.
