DPO Gujrat Reviews Muharram Security Arrangements

District Police Officer (DPO) Gujrat Akhtar Farooq visited the District Control Room established at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to review security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram. According to official sources, the DPO, accompanied by officers of other security agencies, received a briefing on the monitoring of mourning processions and Majalis across the district, security deployment, and the overall law and order situation. DPO's Directives for Foolproof Security

DPO Akhtar Farooq directed officials to ensure foolproof security, effective monitoring, and close coordination among all concerned departments. He stressed that all available resources should be utilized to maintain peace and provide a secure environment for mourners. He said the police and other law enforcement agencies were working in coordination to ensure the safety of participants and maintain law and order across the district.

“The safety of mourners is our top priority. We are utilizing all resources, including modern technology and human intelligence, to ensure a peaceful Muharram,” the DPO stated. He also instructed officers to remain vigilant and respond swiftly to any untoward incident.

Security Measures and Deployment

As part of the security arrangements, the district police have deployed over 1,500 personnel, including commandos and traffic police, to manage processions and Majalis. Snipers have been positioned on rooftops along procession routes, and quick-response teams are on standby. The district administration has also imposed Section 144, banning the carrying of weapons and aerial firing.

The DPO emphasized the importance of community cooperation and urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the police helpline. He also reviewed the traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement of mourners and minimize inconvenience to the public.

Background and Context

Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed with particular solemnity by Shia Muslims, who hold processions and Majalis to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) at Karbala. Security arrangements are typically heightened during this period to prevent sectarian violence and maintain public order.

In previous years, Gujrat has witnessed peaceful Muharram observances, but authorities remain cautious due to the potential for threats from extremist elements. The district police have been conducting search operations and intelligence-led raids in the weeks leading up to Muharram to preempt any untoward incidents.
