The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has finalized all arrangements for the general elections scheduled for July 27, 2023, covering 53 seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly. According to official sources, preparations for holding free, fair, and transparent polls have entered their final stage.
Political Campaigns Gain Momentum
Following the announcement of the election schedule, political activities have surged across the region. Major political parties have launched vigorous campaigns to secure public support, as reported by AJK Election Commission sources. The final list of candidates has been issued for 33 general seats of AJK and 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in Pakistan.
Official data reveals that a total of 846 candidates are contesting the elections, representing various political parties as well as independent candidates. The polling scheme for the July 27 elections has also been prepared.
Registered Voters and Polling Stations
The total number of registered voters in AJK stands at 3,804,368, comprising 2,001,655 male voters and 1,802,715 female voters. These voters will elect representatives for the next five-year term. To facilitate voters and ensure transparency, 6,983 polling stations have been established across AJK and in relevant areas of Pakistan for refugee constituency voters.
The Election Commission stated that arrangements regarding security, transportation of election material, and deployment of polling staff are being finalized.
Key Political Parties and Contest
A tough contest is expected among major political parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) AJK, Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and several other national and regional parties. Party leaders and candidates are actively engaging voters through public meetings, corner meetings, and election gatherings.
Political analysts believe that the elections will pave the way for the formation of a new government in AJK, and the results are likely to have a significant impact on the region's political landscape.
Code of Conduct and Transparency
The Election Commission has directed all political parties and candidates to strictly follow the election code of conduct, reiterating its commitment to holding free, fair, and transparent elections. Security measures and logistical arrangements are being finalized to ensure a smooth electoral process.
