Tribal Elders Allege Illegal Coal Mining in Darra Adam Khel
Tribal elders in Darra Adam Khel have voiced strong allegations against unauthorized coal mining operations in the region, claiming that these activities are causing severe environmental degradation and posing significant safety hazards to local communities. The elders, representing various tribes, gathered at a press conference in Peshawar to highlight their concerns and demand immediate intervention from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.
Environmental and Safety Concerns
According to the elders, illegal mining has led to the destruction of agricultural land, contamination of water sources, and increased air pollution. They also pointed out that the mining operations are being conducted without any regard for safety measures, resulting in frequent accidents that have claimed several lives. The elders urged the government to take strict action against the miners and implement regulations to prevent further damage.
Call for Government Action
The tribal elders have called on the provincial government to form a fact-finding committee to investigate the allegations. They also demanded the cancellation of licenses of companies involved in illegal mining and the arrest of those responsible. "We will not tolerate the exploitation of our resources at the cost of our health and environment," said Malik Sher Zaman, a prominent tribal elder.
Background
Darra Adam Khel, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, is known for its rich coal reserves. However, the lack of proper regulation has led to rampant illegal mining, which has been a persistent issue in the area. Previous attempts by the government to curb these activities have largely been unsuccessful due to the involvement of influential parties.
The elders have warned of launching a protest movement if their demands are not met. They have also sought the support of civil society organizations and environmental groups to amplify their cause.
